Mumlavský Waterfall (Mumlavský vodospad)

Below you will find practical information: Where to park your car? How long does it take to get to Mumlavský Waterfall? What is the shortest route? Which route to choose to Mumlavský Waterfall? You will find answers to these and other questions below.

Mumlavský Waterfall (Mumlavský vodopád) – when in Harrachov, you can’t miss Mumlavský Waterfall. This picturesque waterfall is located about 1.5 km east of the town, in the heart of the Czech Krkonoše Mountains. The Mumlava stream creates a series of cascades here, flowing over granite steps, the highest of which is about 10 meters tall.

One of the most fascinating features of this place are the evorsion pots, known as Devil’s Eyes (Czech: Čertova oka), which water and stones have carved into the riverbed. In winter, the waterfall often freezes, transforming into an impressive icefall that attracts lovers of winter landscapes.

Mumlavský Waterfall is definitely wider but lower than Kamieńczyk Waterfall located on the Polish side of the Krkonoše Mountains.

Mumlavský Waterfall (Mumlavský vodopád) Practical Information:

Mumlavský Waterfall Parking

For our trip to Mumlavský Waterfall, we chose the parking lot closest to our attraction, right next to the Mining Museum in Harrachov 🅿️ (parking coordinates - cost is 100 CZK/all day). If this lot is full, don’t worry, you can park a bit further away 🅿️ (parking coordinates - 200 CZK/all day).

Mumlavský Waterfall Trail

After getting out of the car, we put on comfortable shoes, grab our backpack, and head towards the Mining Museum. Although the map suggests a longer route, we can shorten the way by passing between buildings – saving some time and a few meters. Soon, a characteristic signpost appears in front of us, and we turn left onto the 🔵🟡blue-yellow trail. This is a simple way to reach our destination faster!

After turning left, we immediately notice the Mining Museum and a small wagon, which is its symbol. However, we continue straight ahead, walking along the asphalt road. This is a convenient route that will easily lead us to our destination.

After leaving the museum and walking about 100 meters, a gravel path appears underfoot, and on the left, the soothing sound of water accompanies us, leading us almost to the waterfall itself. However, before we get too dreamy, a signpost appears on the path. We stay on the main trail and go straight, but for families with children, there are several great attractions here. You can turn left immediately or choose this route on the way back via the Fox Path (Liščí stezka).

Fox Path – What Does It Offer?

This is an educational, interactive trail, perfect for the youngest (though adults will find something for themselves too!). Here’s what awaits on this family-friendly trail:

  • Educational Interactive Boards: Children have the opportunity to learn interesting facts about foxes – their habits and natural environment.

  • Physical Challenges: The path offers eight stops with various physical challenges, adding a bit of activity to the walk.

  • Playground: There is a small playground in the area, perfect for a short break (though adults might think the kids deserve the rest more!).

As we continue our hike, the terrain underfoot changes as well. Roots start to appear, and over time, more and more stones. After walking about 500 meters, we reach a wooden bridge – an ideal spot to take a look at Mumlavský Waterfall. But is this the best place to admire it? In our opinion – not necessarily! It’s worth getting closer to the waterfall, although the terrain becomes more challenging there – the stones can be slippery, so each step must be taken carefully. The view is worth it! From this spot, you can also clearly see the famous Devil’s Eyes, which add charm to the landscape.

Behind us, there is a small viewpoint with benches – a perfect spot to sit down for a moment and rest, soaking in the atmosphere.

We decided to continue along the 🟢green trail to see what the Mumlava River looks like higher up, above the waterfall. This is a quieter part of the route, where you encounter far fewer tourists. You can sit on the stones and quietly admire the beauty of the surrounding nature. In this area, you’ll also find more of the Devil’s Eyes and a second, less impressive but equally charming waterfall.

Although we returned the same way, there is also the option to make a small loop. This time, the route follows an asphalt path, and along the way, you can turn left onto the Fox Path – a great option with attractions for children. The route leads over a bridge, and then you just need to turn right to get back on the main trail. Looking for a map of the route? You can find it here. 🙂
